After renting their first New York apartment sight unseen, they decided to take a new place in the South Bronx with eyes wide open. Altin Sencalar’s timing could hardly have been worse. “New York is the destination for jazz,” said Mr. Sencalar, a jazz trombonist. So a year and a half ago, he and his wife, Marina Sencalar, signed on — sight unseen — to an apartment in Washington Heights. Mr. Sencalar planned to perform and teach, as he had done in his native Texas. “The day I moved here was the day I got called to go on tour with Michael Bublé,” he said. For months the couple’s $2,350 three-bedroom apartment sat mostly unused, an expensive storage unit. Ms. Sencalar remained in Texas with her parents.

Few neighborhoods have seen the same level of transformation as Gowanus in recent years, and developer Domain Companies' pair of high-rises are the latest to join the growing throng of skyscrapers. Located along the Gowanus Canal, the 15- and 2-story towers will have 360 apartments with 25% earmarked as affordable. Charity Hospital on Tulane Avenue has sat abandoned since Hurricane Katrina. Now, a $500M+ Tulane University-led project aimed at turning the former hospital into a mix of apartments, research labs and retail is moving forward. Tulane and its partners in the project said in October that they hope to move in by 2027.

Construction is rising on Jasper, Domain's 13-story residential building in Long Island City. Designed by S9 Architects, the 125-foot fall structure will span 550,000 SF and yield 499 units in studio to three-bedroom layouts with 150 reserved for affordable housing
