Markham Gardens in Staten Island, NY, received a major highlight in the New York Times‘ article on David Schalliol’s new anthology “Affordable Housing in New York: The People, Places and Policies That Transformed a City.” Through a series of photographs, interviews with residents, and contributions from leading scholars, Schalliol’s book surveys the changing landscape of affordable housing, as it moves away from the high-rise developments of yesterday and instead focuses on building attractive community settings.
One of the aims of this book, this project, is not only to demonstrate the wide variety of these developments, but also the common experience within them. It’s where people make their homes, where they meet their friends. They don’t just come home, they’re actively producing community,” said Schalliol.
