Façade installation is making progress on 420 Carroll Street, a two-tower residential complex in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Designed by FXCollaborative and developed by Domain Companies, the project consists of a 20-story, 224-foot-tall tower and a shorter 15-story sibling and will yield 360 units with 25 percent reserved for affordable housing, as well as 27,500 square feet of retail space, 7,700 square feet of “Gowanus Mix” space pursuant to the 82-block district rezoning, and a new public promenade along the Gowanus Canal.

If you’re like a lot of renters hunting in New York City for a new development with all the bells and whistles, the Bronx is probably not your first choice. It may seem too far from Manhattan or you may think rentals there are primarily older buildings. But new development is taking off in a big way in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx and it may be worth a look. New construction rental buildings have amenities similar to what you would find at luxury buildings (like pools, roof decks, gyms and more), with rents lower than what you find for comparable-sized units in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Mott Haven’s new development surge is a result of two rezonings, followed by developers pouring funds into Mott Haven, once largely an industrial area known for making pianos, among other types of light manufacturing. Now Mott Haven leads the city for new housing units.

The local grocery store Dumbo Market has signed a lease for approximately 13,500 square feet of space at Jasper, a $370 million mixed-use development in Long Island City.

The new location, brokered by Igloo, is set to open in early 2025 alongside the project’s completion. Jasper is a joint venture between The Domain Companies, LMXD, the VOREA Group, and Bridge Investment Group, and was designed by S9 Architecture.

Tacos del Cartel is expanding. VEHO Hospitality Group, the Mexican restaurant’s parent company, is renovating the location at 2901 David Drive in Metairie while preparing to open a second location at 1010 Girod Street in the Central Business District. The CBD location will be open before Cinco de Mayo, and the Metairie location, which debuted in 2020, will close briefly before reopening in June.

VEHO is led by Danny Cruz and Vilexys Cruz, who the say the renovation and new location are part of an overall rebranding of the dining concept.

The Domain Companies and VEHO Hospitality announced that Tacos del Cartel, an authentic Mexican restaurant, will open in time for Cinco de Mayo at The Beacon at South Market, a $500 million mixed-use, transit-oriented development that combines luxury apartments with retail, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The restaurant is the second Tacos del Cartel location, joining existing locations in Metairie, which will close for renovations and reopen this summer, and one opening soon in Palm Beach, Florida.

According to a news release, the new location is opening in The Beacon at South Market in the Central Business District “in time for Cinco de Mayo.” The release states the restaurant will be led by Chef Christian Chaussant and serve up a menu featuring street tacos, mezcal, Tex-Mex dishes and cocktails.

General Manager Simon Anquetin and Chef Daniel Lindner shared selections from a downtown salt lake city eatery and bar called The Local. The Local offers a $12 lunch specials Monday through Friday from 11am-2pm. The special comes with an entree and your choice of side.
