Teenagers from Spring Creek Gardens have the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive photography program led by the Slideluck Youth Initiative, aimed at fostering creative expression and empowering students using photography and multimedia storytelling. Young residents sign up to attend weekly workshops facilitated by photography professionals and featuring accomplished guest presenters.
Students are then loaned cameras to shoot their lives, schools and communities, sharing their work weekly as they evolve their subject matter and technique. 2014’s program resulted in a partnership with Whole Foods to decorate the store’s Union Square location with the students’ portrait photography. In 2015, the program took Spring Creek youth to Governors Island for a private tour of the garden, farm, and photo gallery featuring an exhibition to commemorate Hurricane Katrina survivors.
